One of the problems that have been slowing me down in the story of late is because there are so many plot developments that I’ve been keeping secret, partially for dramatic purposes, and partially because… well, I didn’t think of them soon enough and so never prepared the reader for them.
The secret submarine dock is one of these. When I finally got Ginger to the island, I knew that Hannibal would be showing up eventually, but I hadn’t sussed out how exactly he was going to do this. Especially as I had a hurricane just about to hit the island. Remember the hurricane? Oh yeah. Well, it occurred to me that having Hannibal arrive by submarine would be a convenient way for him to make a surprise entrance; and a secret underground dock would fit in with my idea of the house being used by smugglers. Except by this time, I had already shown Hannibal en route to the island on board a regular boat.
I wound up having to cram a lot of expository stuff into Peaches’s monolouging. Kind of clunky, I’m afraid. I really need to plan these things out better.
