Tell us about your family.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I live in the Enchanted Land-O-Cheese, in the City of\u00c2\u00a0 Sheboygan, roughly between Milwaukee and Green Bay.\u00c2\u00a0 I met my wife, Lute, in junior high when she played bass clarinet and I played alto sax in band.\u00c2\u00a0 When I learned she drew dragons and when she loaned me her paperback of the STAR WARS novelization, I should have known we were destined for each other.\u00c2\u00a0 We have two daughters, Gamera Rose and Rodan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any pets? Do you ever draw your pets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We currently have two cats, two finches, a snake, several fish and about a half dozen ferrets.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, we have pets; and yes, I\u00c2\u00a0 occasionally draw them.\u00c2\u00a0 Drawing ferrets is a challenge, because except when they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sleeping they rarely sit still.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What made you decide to become an artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve always enjoyed drawing.\u00c2\u00a0 I suppose if there is any single influence that inspired me in that direction it would have been the collection of POGO books my Dad had in our basement.\u00c2\u00a0 Although I never really copied Walt Kelly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s style, his POGO cartoons taught me a lot about pacing and dialouge in comics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you take art lessons?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I took Art in High School and studied Graphic Design at Iowa State University.\u00c2\u00a0 But I also picked up a lot of my cartooning by osmosis from the comics I enjoyed reading, such as Walt Kelly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s POGO and Herg\u00c3\u00a9\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s TINTIN.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m afraid my love of cartooning spoiled me for doing any kind of serious art.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the hardest part about illustrating a book?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the case of Trouble on Earth Day, the hardest part was that I colored it entirely by computer, something I was teaching myself as I went along.\u00c2\u00a0 I had to do a bit of trial and error to get things the way I wanted.\u00c2\u00a0 I still haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mastered Photoshop yet; but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m working at it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/earthday-thumbnails.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-702\" title=\"earthday thumbnails\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/earthday-thumbnails-607x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/earthday-thumbnails-607x1024.jpg 607w, http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/earthday-thumbnails-178x300.jpg 178w, http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/earthday-thumbnails.jpg 976w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/a>Please describe the process you go through to illustrate a book.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first step is the break the story up into pages, so that the text on each page forms a single thought or event that can be represented by a single image.\u00c2\u00a0 I map out the book by drawing boxes on a sheet of paper and making a thumbnail sketch in each box representing a page.<\/p>\n<p>About the same time, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m also doing rough sketches of the characters to determine how I want them to look.\u00c2\u00a0 I tried several looks for Shelby, before I settled on her final design.\u00c2\u00a0 I send the character sketches and the page thumbnails to the Author for approval.\u00c2\u00a0 When roughing out the pages, I try to make sure there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s enough space to accomodate the text for that page.<\/p>\n<p>There are one or two pages in <em>Trouble<\/em> where I could have done better,\u00c2\u00a0 On the page where Shelby goes out into the woods, I wound up with no blank space at all, and the text had to go over the trees in the background.\u00c2\u00a0 In the end, I think it worked; but I had to tweak the background a lot to make sure the text would read clearly against it.<\/p>\n<p>As I finish the pages, I send them to the Author for approval so that I can make any necessary alterations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you decide to illustrate Trouble on Earth Day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kathy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s editor put us in touch with each other and Kathy asked if I would be interested.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been a long-time \u00e2\u20ac\u0153furry\u00e2\u20ac\u009d artist, and the story sounded like fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long did it take for you to illustrate the book?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Longer than it should have.\u00c2\u00a0 But that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the way these projects always seem to go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What materials and supplies did you use for the pictures? What is your favorite medium?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For Trouble on Earth Day I kept things pretty simple.\u00c2\u00a0 I drew the original black &amp; white line art on plain paper with Faber-Castell fine line markers in a variety of widths.\u00c2\u00a0 I then scanned the line art and colored it on my computer using Adobe Photoshop.<\/p>\n<p>I used to use a Crow-quill pen and India Ink exclusively for my cartooning, because I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t trust markers.\u00c2\u00a0 But they tend to be tempremental and messy and the pen nibs became harder to find. More recently I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve found some artist\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s markers with waterproof inks that won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pick up on my hands and give me a steady reliable line.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve liked to use watercolors to color my works.\u00c2\u00a0 I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t done as much of that lately.\u00c2\u00a0 Usually for color commissions I will use colored pencils.\u00c2\u00a0 For my book illustrations, though, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve used Photoshop to give a more consistant color coverage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you decide on the cover?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Early on I decided that the center of the story was the point where Shelby hears the crying in the woods and goes to investigate; so I wanted to capture the moment when she comes across the place where the trees were gone.\u00c2\u00a0 I hoped to evoke a sense of mystery and a sense of what the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Trouble\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of the title might be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which illustration in this book is your favorite and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think my two favorites are the one I mentioned of Shelby venturing out into the woods.\u00c2\u00a0 I tried to capture the atmosphere of\u00c2\u00a0 the big silent forest and the little squirrel alone in it, following the sound of the crying.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sketch-bird-with-guitar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-703\" title=\"sketch bird with guitar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sketch-bird-with-guitar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sketch-bird-with-guitar.jpg 447w, http:\/\/www.kurtoonsonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/sketch-bird-with-guitar-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/a>My other favorite is the one at the end where Charlie the Bluebird is playing the guitar and Shelby is dancing.\u00c2\u00a0 That one grew out of a sketch I made when I was trying to develop a design for Charlie.\u00c2\u00a0 On a whim, I drew him jamming on an electric guitar.\u00c2\u00a0 Kathy loved the sketch, and so I developed it into one of the pages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you model your characters from real people?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I do.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact,\u00c2\u00a0 my design for Shelby Squirrel was based on my youngest daughter, who was in kindergarten about the time I started work on the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was there part of the story that was difficult to illustrate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charlie was the biggest challenge.\u00c2\u00a0 Shelby and her family were essentially small humans wearing squirrel suits; I could fall back on my habits from years of drawing \u00e2\u20ac\u0153furry\u00e2\u20ac\u009d comics.\u00c2\u00a0 But I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t drawn a lot of birds; so I actually had to do some research.\u00c2\u00a0 I discussed with Kathy what kind of bird we wanted him to be and I did several reference sketches until I was comfortable drawing him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have a collection of your own artwork? Do you hang illustrations in your home as artwork?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have a lot of my own artwork, but very little on the walls.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve always found framing the pieces to be a major hassle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any wise words for students who like to draw?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keep drawing.\u00c2\u00a0 Keep a sketchbook that you can rip off doodles in.\u00c2\u00a0 Use it to draw people you see; things in your room, scenes out the window; anything.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s okay to copy other people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s artwork; it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s how most artists learn to develop styles of their own.\u00c2\u00a0 Copying from reference photos is good too.\u00c2\u00a0 With enough practice, you can draw things out of your head, but even the most experienced artist still will work from reference photos.<\/p>\n<p>Draw from the Inside Out.\u00c2\u00a0 People have skeletons, but even a table lamp has a skeleton of sorts.\u00c2\u00a0 If you understand the underlying structure of an object, it will be more believable when you draw it.\u00c2\u00a0 I always start my drawings by roughing out the basic structure, and then drawing the form around it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What artists\/styles have influenced you the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve mentioned Walt Kelly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s classic comic strip POGO, and also the adventures of TINTIN by the Belgian cartoonist Herg\u00c3\u00a9.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m also a fan of Japanese animation and comics and have picked up a bit of the Manga style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to illustrating picture books, how do you use your art talents?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve done a bit of drawing for a couple of small comic book companies in the past, chiefly \u00e2\u20ac\u0153furry\u00e2\u20ac\u009d comics, (comics featuring anthropomorphic animals) for Antarctic Press and Radio Comix.\u00c2\u00a0 I do occasional commision artwork and I do cartoon portraits at a few local craft fairs and farmer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s markets.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition I draw a webcomic entitled HANNIBAL TESLA ADVENTURE MAGAZINE, a
